The second job no one talks about

Reader,

Let’s tell the truth: many of us are doing double duty. One role has a title, a paycheck, and maybe even a corner office. The other? It has no salary, no benefits, and no boundaries.

I’m talking about caregiving.

For Black women in midlife, caregiving isn’t an exception—it’s an expectation. We are the ones driving our parents to doctor’s visits, covering prescriptions, holding down households, paying the bills, and rearranging our calendars—all while leading teams, showing up for our communities, and carrying the weight of being “the strong one.”

Here’s what a recent study revealed about the weight we already feel it in our bones:
🌍 Black caregivers spend 34% of their income on caregiving costs—more than any other group.
💼 Many of us scale back hours or turn down promotions just to keep everything afloat.
💔 The toll shows up in our bodies: hypertension, sleepless nights, and the quiet creep of burnout.

And still, it’s treated like invisible labor. Employers don’t account for it. Retirement plans don’t factor it in. Too often, even family assumes we’ll “just handle it.”

So here’s the invitation: take a pause and ask yourself—

✨ Who else in my family has the capacity to share this responsibility with me?
✨ How am I protecting my health and career with boundaries that honor my worth?

This isn’t only about surviving the moment. It’s about preserving your power, your peace, and your possibility.

Because yes, you are a caregiver. But you are also a leader. A builder. A woman whose rest, joy, and future matter.

In Solidarity,

Hey Reader, The house is quiet. Too quiet. The bed feels bigger than it should. The kids are gone. The routines that once carried your days have vanished.Even your prayers feel hollow. Midlife has a way of exposing what’s been running on autopilot. Career accolades that once mattered, friendships that no longer nourish, routines that no longer sustain — suddenly, everything that used to fill your life feels empty. And here’s the truth: emptiness isn’t a sign that you’ve failed. It’s a signal; a...

Hey Reader, Black women are the canaries in America’s economic coal mine. When federal jobs are cut, we feel it first. When DEI programs vanish, mentorship pipelines shrink, and stability erodes, we feel it first. Gender economist Katica Roy reminded us in a recent NY Times Article: “It’s the signal of something dangerous in the air.” This isn’t just a news story. It’s a warning—and a wake-up call. 300,000 Black women have been pushed out of the workforce in just months. The ripple effects...

Hey Reader, Before you jump back into the workflow, let me point you to three areas to ponder: Your Career: Is it fulfilling, or just familiar? Your Friends: Do they pour into you or drain you? Your Relationship: Does it make you grow or shrink? These are uncomfortable questions, and most of us have learned to silence them. We stay busy, stay needed, stay distracted. But midlife won’t let us hide forever. At some point, the quiet voice gets louder: This isn’t working anymore. Something has to...
